Anaerobic biodegradation of benzo(a)pyrene by a novel Cellulosimicrobium cellulans CWS2 isolated from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon-contaminated soil BJM
Qin,Wei; Fan,Fuqiang; Zhu,Yi; Huang,Xiaolong; Ding,Aizhong; Liu,Xiang; Dou,Junfeng.
Abstract Cellulosimicrobium cellulans CWS2, a novel strain capable of utilizing benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) as the sole carbon and energy source under nitrate-reducing conditions, was isolated from PAH-contaminated soil. Temperature and pH significantly affected BaP biodegradation, and the strain exhibited enhanced biodegradation ability at temperatures above 30 °C and between pH 7 and 10. The highest BaP removal rate (78.8%) was observed in 13 days when the initial BaP concentration was 10 mg/L, and the strain degraded BaP at constant rate even at a higher concentration (50 mg/L). Metal exposure experimental results illustrated that Cd(II) was the only metal ion that significantly inhibited biodegradation of BaP. The addition of 0.5 and 1.0 g/L glucose enhanced...

Design of waste stabilization ponds for dairy processing plants in Uganda CIGR Journal
Menya, Emmanuel; Wangi, G. M.; Amanyire, F.; Ebangu, B..
Waste stabilization ponds (WSP) were designed to treat 287.5 m3 day-1 of wastewater generated from processing of 100 m3 of milk per day.  The design involved use of existing models including those developed by Mara to size the anaerobic, facultative and maturation ponds.  The design temperature was 250C.  The anaerobic pond was designed based on volumetric organic loading rate while facultative pond was designed based on surface loading rate.  On the other hand, the maturation pond was designed based on the number of coliform bacteria removed per 100 mL of wastewater.  The anaerobic pond was designed to remove 70% BOD, facultative pond-75% and maturation pond-25% BOD.  In addition, the maturation pond was designed to have a coliform bacteria removal...

Effect of temperature on two-phase anaerobic reactors treating slaughterhouse wastewater BABT
Beux,Simone; Nunes,Ezequiel; Barana,Ana Cláudia.
The effectiveness of the anaerobic treatment of effluent from a swine and bovine slaughterhouse was assessed in two sets of two-phase anaerobic digesters, operated with or without temperature control. Set A, consisting of an acidogenic reactor with recirculation and an upflow biological filter as the methanogenic phase, was operated at room temperature, while set B, consisting of an acidogenic reactor without recirculation and an upflow biological filter as the methanogenic phase, was maintained at 32°C. The methanogenic reactors showed COD (Chemical Demand of Oxygen) removal above 60% for HRT (Hydraulic Retention Time) values of 20, 15, 10, 8, 6, 4, and 2 days. When the HRT value in those reactors was changed to 1 day, the COD percentage removal decreased...

Genetic diversity of 16S rRNA and mcrA genes from methanogenic archaeas Biological Sciences
Xavier, Keyla Vitoria Marques; Souza, Eden Silva e; Santos, Erick de Aquino; Diniz, Michely Correia.
Methanogenic archaeas are found in aquatic and terrestrial environments and are fundamental in the conversion of organic matter into methane, a gas that has a potential use as renewable source of energy, which is also considered as one of the main agents of the greenhouse effect. The vast majority of microbial genomes can be identified by a conservative molecular marker, the 16S ribosomal gene. However, the mcrA gene have been using in studies of methanogenic archaea diversity as an alternative marker, highly conserved and present only in methanogens. This gene allows the expression of the enzyme Methyl-coenzyme M reductase, the main agent in converting by-products of anaerobic digestion into methane. In this context, we aimed to study the genetic...

Metabolomics based on UHPLC-QToF- and APGC-QToF-MS reveals metabolic pathways reprogramming in response to tidal cycles in the sub-littoral species Mimachlamys varia exposed to aerial emergence ArchiMer
Ory, Pascaline; Bonnet, Antoine; Mondeguer, Florence; Breitwieser, Marine; Dubillot, Emmanuel; Graber, Marianne.
Mimachlamys varia is a sub-littoral bivalve encountered from Norway to the Mediterranean Sea, which lives mostly byssally attached to rocks. During the low tide period, M. varia individuals, located highest on the shore, may experience short time of aerial exposure and face a low availability of oxygen. Here we report a comparative metabolomic profiling of gill samples of M. varia obtained by both LC-QToF and APGC-QToF mass spectrometry, to analyze metabolic changes occurring during emersion in comparison with immersion. Scallops were grown in aquaria with a simulated intertidal environment mimicking short-duration air exposure that they might experience during extreme tides: alternating 2 h emersion and 10 h immersion. Our results show a switch from...

Quali/quantitative characterization of biogas produced in batch digesters supplied with six distinct substrates REA
Galbiatti,João A.; Caramelo,Anaira D.; Chiconato,Denise A.; Araújo,José R.; Girardi,Eliana A. B..
The present research was carried out at the DER/FCAV, São Paulo State University - Brazil, with the purpose of analyzing the quantity and quality of biogas produced by six types of substrates. The substrates used in the anaerobic digestion were characterized as: 1- Litter of broiler (LB); 2- Grinded broiler litter (GBL); 3- Broiler litter with wood shavings (BLWS); 4- Grinded broiler litter with wood shavings (GBLWS); 5- Broiler litter with peanut hulls (BLPH); 6- Grinded broiler litter with peanut hull (GBLPH). It was concluded from the collected data that: the (GBL) substrate showed a superior biogas accumulated production in relation to the other substrates, while the BLWS presented an inferior accumulated production; the grinded substrates showed...

Start-up adjustment of a plug-flow digester for cassava wastewater (manipueira) treatment Scientia Agricola
Ribas,Maria Magdalena Ferreira; Barana,Ana Cláudia.
Manipueira, wastewater of cassava (Manihot esculenta) processing, can be treated by anaerobic biodigestion. To study the start-up process of a plug-flow digester for manipueira treatment, this work consisted of two stages: gradual decrease of the hydraulic retention time (HRT) to the preset time of 4 days or maintaining a fixed HRT of 4 days with gradual increase of the substrate concentration. A digester of 1980 mL capacity was opperated, at constant temperature (32 ± 1º C), with substrate pH corrected between 5.5 and 6.0. The first stage had durations of 16.6; 13.6; 11.6; and 9.6 days and the organic loads were 3.1; 2.0; 2.3; and 2.9 COD L-1 d-1, (chemical oxigen demand) respectively. The second stage was characterized by a fixed HRT (4 days) and organic...
